Customer:  Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Specially Protected Natural Territories In the Ministry of Ecology in Kyrgyzstan

Financed by:  UNDP-GEF project "Conservation of Globally Important Biodiversity and Associated Land and Forest Resources of the Western Tien-Shan"

Period: 2019 – 2022

Project Stage: The information system has been developed and is currently operating.

The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water, and air. It is the most precious thing we have, and we need to defend it.
-  David Attenborough

We feel a profound responsibility for the preservation of biodiversity on our planet, especially in our homeland, Kyrgyzstan. Nature has endowed our country with breathtaking and unique beauty. That’s why we gladly embraced the opportunity to participate in a UNDP tender, aiming to make a meaningful contribution to safeguarding the biodiversity, wildlife, and plant life of Kyrgyzstan and the entire world.

Features

The "Protected Areas and Biodiversity Monitoring Information System" is a digital platform designed to manage and automate biodiversity data in Kyrgyzstan. This system provides a centralized platform for managing information related to protected areas, enabling authorities to efficiently oversee conservation efforts and monitor the status of various species and ecosystems.

Key Features and Functions:

Data Collection and Management:

  • Centralizes information on protected areas, including geographical boundaries, legal status, and management plans.
  • Facilitates the collection, storage, and analysis of data related to biodiversity, such as species populations, habitat conditions, and conservation measures.

Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Supports the monitoring of biodiversity indicators to assess the health and trends of ecosystems and species.
  • Provides tools for generating reports on the status of protected areas and biodiversity, helping in decision-making and regulatory compliance.

User Access and Permissions:

  • Enables different levels of user access, ensuring that only authorized personnel can update or view sensitive information.
  • Designed for use by conservation organizations, government agencies, researchers, and inspectors.

Integration with Other Systems:

  • Can be integrated with geographic information systems (GIS) for spatial analysis and mapping of protected areas.
  • Allows data exchange with other environmental monitoring systems for more comprehensive environmental management.

By centralizing and streamlining data management, the Protected Areas and Biodiversity Monitoring Information System plays a crucial role in protecting natural habitats, supporting biodiversity conservation efforts, and ensuring sustainable development.

The information system provides a unique and exclusive electronic database of the animals and plants of Kyrgyzstan, featuring a comprehensive registry of protected areas and hunting grounds. It streamlines the processes for reporting, automating approvals, and managing the sustainable extraction of biological resources, ensuring efficient conservation and resource management.

Key Results

  • Creation of Electronic Databases: For the first time, comprehensive electronic databases of animals and plants found within the Kyrgyz Republic have been established and populated.
  • Classification System: Animals and plants have been classified according to international classification standards, enhancing the organization and accessibility of biodiversity data.
  • Protected Areas Registry: A detailed registry of specially protected natural territories (SPNT) has been developed to streamline management and reporting.
  • User Access for Data Input: Employees from protected areas and hunting enterprises have been connected to the system, allowing them to independently enter data regarding wildlife observations in their territories.
  • Data Reporting and Visualization: The collected data is formatted into reports and visualized through graphs, making it easier to analyze biodiversity trends.
  • Hunting Permit Management: A module for issuing hunting permits has been developed, which is dependent on the reports provided on wildlife observations. Quotas for hunting permits are determined based on the population of animals observed, enabling effective monitoring of biodiversity conservation in Kyrgyzstan.
